Human morality without God

One argument for the existence of God is that if his ultimate morality did not exist and we will not suffer judgment for our actions, then ethics don't matter and we'd all be running around killing each other and raping and pillaging. But if you take a step back and just consider the possibility that if God doesn't exist, then humans would have invented our own morality, and the outcome of that morality would be exactly what we would already be doing: it would be exactly what we already see in the real world. In a world with no God, then where we have progressed to in our morality over all these centuries really is the result of humans "just doing it." If there really is no ultimate morality, then yes, we really would be able to just do whatever we want. And "whatever we want" has turned into exactly all of the moral codes of every culture on the planet. Sharing with the needy, caring for the young and elderly and sick, always good. Clubbing and eating babies, always bad. This is the reality we have progressed to without God ever being around. So the argument that without God we'd all be running around killing each other is not valid. In fact, since humanity holds its own moral compass and future in our hands, we can, as a civilization, rise in morality as we advance in knowledge.

And we've done it. We've gotten rid of slavery, gotten rid of prejudice. Granted, we have a ways to go yet, but we are far better than we were even 100 years ago. In those cultures which have not adapted to an acceptable moral code, those cases are in cultures that have been held back because they are holding on to their religiously-based modalities. That's why we judge jihadists (I single out Islam only for the sake of illustration) as we do: it is not because they are an affront to God, it is because they are an affront to us, the humans, and to the morality that we have progressed to as a world-wide culture. That is why they truly are evil; that is what causes them, what drives them, to kill other people - their religious morality. And that is why we need to get rid of religion - because it is literally holding us back.
