How to root your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (SCH-I545)

I have been working on this for months now, so once I finally got it working, I thought it deserved a blog post

Prerequisites

Instructions

  1. Enable USB Debugging in Android
    1. Go to Settings->About phone
    2. Scroll to the bottom to "Build number"
    3. Tap "Build number"7 times
      1. After the third tap, you will see a dialogue box that tells you are only X taps away from being a developer, ignore it
  2. Boot phone into Download Mode
    1. Power off the phone
    2. Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons
    3. Release buttons when "Warning!!" message appears
    4. Press Volume Up button to confirm Download Mode
    5. Device will show green Android with "Downloading… Do not turn off target" message
  3. Connect phone to PC with USB cable
  4. Install OC1 via Odin
    1. Run Odin
    2. Click AP button and load OC1 kernel
    3. Start, install should take a few seconds
  5. Disconnect phone from PC
  6. Install Wondershare MobileGo
  7. Reconnect phone to PC and let MobileGo to recognize it
  8. Click One-Click Root button
    1. Installation takes ~5 minutes
  9. Repeat steps 2-4 with the OF1 kernel
    1. Although OC1 works fine, you will likely experience "Unauthorized actions have been detected" messages with it
And you're done!
